Salesforce Marketing Cloud - Do Not Track
Not just since the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force just over two years ago, we have been asked time and again by our customers how to prevent individual tracking of email user behavior in the Marketing Cloud. Whether due to a lack of consent or a general company policy — there are many reasons for not tracking email recipients.
Salesforce offers several ways to prevent email tracking in the Marketing Cloud.

At email delivery level
- Regardless of whether it's Send Flow or Triggered Send Definition — in the delivery configuration, you can deactivate tracking individually for each delivery.
At person level
- For standard subscribers, the attribute can be DoNotTrack Set it up in the Preference Management area of the Email Studio. With the corresponding values 0/1 or No/Yes, email engagement tracking can be set or switched off individually. This ensures that the opening or clicking behavior of individual people, regardless of the basic settings for sending emails, is not recorded.
- The doNotTrack attribute can also be used analogously for triggered sends. It is added to the Triggered Send Data Extension and the recipient-corresponding values are also transferred in the triggering API call.
As a result, the emails whose openings and clicks must not be recorded do not contain any tracked redirect links and also no tracking pixel to capture the opening.
Of course, this also has an effect on the corresponding KPIs of the mailings, which you should be aware of even before the DoNotTrack function is introduced.
